From #1 New York Times bestselling authors Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu comes the second book in the Eldest Curses series and a thrilling adventure for High Warlock Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood, for whom a death-defying mission into the heart of evil is not just a job, it’s also a romantic getaway. The Lost Book of the White is a Shadowhunters novel.

Life is good for Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood. They’re living together in a fabulous loft, their warlock son, Max, has started learning to walk, and the streets of New York are peaceful and quiet—as peaceful and quiet as they ever are, anyway.

Until the night that two old acquaintances break into Magnus’s apartment and steal the powerful Book of the White. Now Magnus and Alec will have to drop everything to get it back. They need to follow the thieves to Shanghai, they need to call some backup to accompany them, and they need a babysitter. Also, someone has stabbed Magnus with a strange magical weapon that is changing the very nature of his powers.

Fortunately, their backup consists of Clary, Jace, Isabelle, and newly minted Shadowhunter Simon. In Shanghai, they learn that a much darker threat awaits them. Magnus’s magic is growing unstable, and if they can’t stop the demons flooding into the city, they might have to follow them all the way back to the source—to the very realm of the dead.

  • Always A Compelling Story

It’s been awhile since I’ve stepped into the Shadowhunter world. There have been several additions during my absence, one of which being this book. I’ve loved all the glimpses into Alec and Magnus’ relationship, adding to the atmosphere of the events of the book instead of detracting from. Every page was a ‘page turner’, each interaction fresh and humorous regardless of how often these characters have been in the same situations. This is a 10/10 recommendation to read this book - I doubt you’ll give it any less too! I hadn’t heard of the Elder Curses series at all before a couple of weeks ago. Now I’m doing my best to not go insane while waiting for the next book!

I’m giving it 4 stars because I can’t help loving Alec and Magnus, but some of the writing seemed a little lazy. Also some of the things the characters said felt out of character.

I have always adored Alec and Magnus’s love story. It’s so real and complex. I love that they are challenging bigoted beliefs and raising a family together. I like getting to have another story with some of my all-time favorite characters. That being said.... this one just didn’t do it for me. The storyline was okay, but everything just seemed flat. There wasn’t that deep emotional connection that I usually feel when reading a Cassandra Clare book. It just lacked the oomph I’ve become accustomed to. It seemed like this was the book that just filled space, like it got major plot lines out of the way and that was the only purpose it served. Did I hate it? No. Did I absolutely love it? Also no. This was surprisingly mediocre for me in terms of enjoyment. I still plan on continuing the series when the next book comes out, but I hope that it’s got more of that Clare drama and depth.
