“There it lay, the great pearl, perfect as the moon.”

Like his father and grandfather before him, Kino is a poor diver, gathering pearls from the gulf beds that once brought great wealth to the Kings of Spain and now provide Kino, Juana, and their infant son with meager subsistence. Then, on a day like any other, Kino emerges from the sea with a pearl as large as a sea gull's egg, as "perfect as the moon." With the pearl comes hope, the promise of comfort and of security....

A story of classic simplicity, based on a Mexican folk tale, The Pearl explores the secrets of man's nature, the darkest depths of evil, and the luminous possibilities of love.

The seventy-eight pages of introduction, filled with political opinion, convinced me to not bother reading the book.
  • I hated this

+SPOILERS AHEAD+ Baby gets sick, they find a pearl, it’s evil, they almost die, the baby does tho, and the pearl is back in the ocean. +END OF SPOILERS+ There. Now you don’t have to read it. I normally like what I read but I hated this book. It has an unnecessary amount of descriptions. It has close to 100 pages when it could be taken down to 40, removing 60 pages of descriptions still making the book interesting. Also I would normally read this book in just a couple of hours but I found it SO boring it took me two weeks to read. I do not recommend this. If zero stars were an option I would pick it. If you don’t have to read it, then don’t.

People say it is a boring book but they aren’t explaining why. I have this book as one of my choices to read for a class project. I wish they would explain why they don’t like it because I want to make an informed decision on wether or not I want to read this book.

I was forced to read this book for class and i HATED it. first of all, this review is not for people who like analyzing literature becuse that is the majority of the book. But even if you enjoy that theres too much description of stuff that doesnt matter. there was a point where he spent 3 pages describing the beach, thats just as many pages as there was actual action. Also the ending sucked and was unnecessary. -978243879423042/10
