Silas Marner by George Elliot was one of the classics we had to read in High School English class so many years ago. I remembered how I loved the story but had forgotten many of its details. Therefore, I decided to reread it again. It is the story of how a lonely, bitter miser's life was transformed by a small child who accidentally came into his life. Though he had lost all of his beloved money, she became 100x more dear to him than all the money in the world. It is not easy reading because of the extensive vocabulary used by the author, but you can highlight any word and get the definition.
  • A timeless classic

Ah, but what we deem to be an utter loss can things yet turn over to a greater gift than ever we could imagine.

This is a book that I had to read for school. It is a hard book to keep you interested but once you start understanding it, it is not that bad.

I had to read this book when I was in high school. That was 1966, and it has been a desire to reread it again. I must have used the Cliff notes back then, because this time was very enjoyable.

While the book may start out slow and perhaps a bit downing, the ending is certainly not going to disappoint. A great book for anyone who enjoys the romantic style.
  • Typical George Elliot-heartwarming and Uplifting

George Elliot's illustration of the hopes, desires and disappointments in her characters, reach out to touch our own lives, and with each book read, I believe we are never the same, being richer for the reading. Through every walk of life, every station in life, each character's soul is bared and left open for our own hearts to go out to them in each page of her books. This book, Silas Marner is no different than all of her presumably better known of her novels, and in fact, the author stated favorite of all the novels that she had written. It is well worth the time to enrich one's heart by reading "Silas Marner"
