The stories in this book are English translations of popular folk tales from a variety of cultures. Before written word, mothers would memorize these stories to pass along to their children. Characters tended to include nameless human heroes and crowds of beasts, birds and fish, all personified to act like humans. As such, the stories are representative of a time when science did not shape our understanding of the world in the way that it does today; it was a time of magic and imagination. The stories were passed along through generations and, with the invention of written language, they were immortalized on paper. The authors of these stories remain unknown.
