Centurions were the guardians of Rome. At the height of the Roman Republic there were over five thousand qualified Roman Centurions in the Legions. To be a Centurion required that, in a mostly illiterate society, one be able to read and write clearly, to be able to convey and create orders, to be capable of not only performing every skill of a Roman soldier but teach every skill of a Roman soldier.

Becoming a Centurion required intense physical ability, courage beyond the norm, years of sacrifice and a total devotion to the philosophy which was Rome. When Rome fell to barbarian invaders, there were less than five hundred qualified Centurions. Not because Rome had fewer people but because it had fewer willing to make the sacrifices. And the last Centurions left their shields in the heather and took a barbarian bride . . .

We are . . . The Last Centurions.
And this Rome SHALL NOT FALL!

Any John Ringo book is worth reading, and if you're like me, a gun carrying, meat eating democrat, with conservative leanings, who is lives in a hippy hell hole (Portland, Oregon) he's a breath of fresh air. The last Centurion is not only very funny, but raises a lot of valid points, some of which make me question my main party choice, ( very good thing to do) and most importantly, make me look closely at THE FACTS. I wonder if the whole book came about as a vehicle to make people reexamine not only who they get information from, but the context in which it's presented in. Anyway, read it. It'll only hurt liberals a little bit, and it's good for you. -AntDemocrat
  • Not what I expected.

Based on the title and cover picture, and even the description, I expected a story of the Roman Empire. This is actually of the near future. During the first 100 or so pages I kept thinking of skipping it. Seemed tedious and dull. Turned out that was all necessary to set the stage for the rest of the story which was great. However, he could have skipped the last 30 pages. Seemed an after thought.

Ok, the title and description was at first misleading. However, I read it all. I like it. Well written in a personal but humorous first person manner. Very believable and well researched.
