Pietro Bembo (1470 - 1547), cardinale e umanista, per primo si è posto il problema di regolare la lingua italiana, codificandola a partire dall'uso che ne avevano fatto i massimi scrittori toscani trecenteschi. Le sue Prose, in cui si ragiona della «volgar lingua», sono considerate uno dei più autorevoli documenti della discussione cinquecentesca sulla lingua, e hanno avuto un'influenza decisiva sullo sviluppo della lingua del nostro Paese.
Pietro Bembo, tuttavia, fu anche poeta. Celebri sono i suoi Asolani, dialoghi in tre libri con alternanza di testi in prosa e poesia, e le sue rime, in particolare le Stanze in stile petrarchesco, composte nel 1530, durante il soggiorno a Venezia.
