When the world's surface is consummately annihilated, the combatant nations develop an artillery of cyborgs called "leadys" which are able to defy the havoc surrounding them. Humans are compelled to inhabit artificial underground cities to escape the deathly radiation above. The radioactivity-immune machines proxy the attacks and the conflict continues.

Will this war ever end? Find out in this Philip K. Dick showpiece, later expanded into a 1964 novel entitled The Penultimate Truth. Some of Dick's other famous short stories were adapted for film, including "Blade Runner," based on his 1968 novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" and "Total Recall," from his short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale," starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in the original and Colin Farrell in the 2012 remake.
