I began making panoramic photographs in the the mid 1970s after seeing the panoramic photographs of Art Sinsabaugh which he made with an ancient panoramic view camera. I tried to buy the same camera he was using and was unable to find one. Next I turned to glueing together darkroom prints of carefully shot overlapping photographs. Not satisfied I tried using in camera panoramic masks. With the invention of Photoshop and Lightroom I currently use their Photomerge option.
Subject means nothing to me. I am drawn to a wide range of subject. The important qualities of a photograph to me are texture and spatial clarity.
There is something mysterious and inviting about panoramic perspective beyond the fact that it is much longer horizontally than a traditional photograph.
I find these photographs harder to work with than traditional digital photographs, because when taking the photograph I can only see the parts not the whole image which can be disappointing once I assemble it on the computer.
