When Madeline Hammond stepped from the train at El Cajon, New Mexico, it was nearly midnight, and her first impression was of a huge dark space of cool, windy emptiness, strange and silent, stretching away under great blinking white stars. Miss, there's no one to meet you, said the conductor, rather anxiously. I wired my brother, she replied. "The train being so late - perhaps he grew tired of waiting. He will be here presently. But, if he should not come - surely I can find a hotel?" There's lodgings to be had. Get the station agent to show you. If you'll excuse me - this is no place for a lady like you to be alone at night. It's a rough little town - mostly Mexicans, miners, cowboys. And they carouse a lot. Besides, the revolution across the border has stirred up some excitement along the line.

This was a great book. I was surprised at the ending. The descriptions of the landscapes were outstanding. As were the mix of characters. A long but worth it book.

A zane grey western that exhibits his love of romance and wilderness. The mountains become a character in its beauty and the awe it inspires. Dreadful problem, editors, get rid of the ethnic slurs and the story may become attractiveto readers of color. It is long overdue!

I enjoyed the story but the ending was too abrupt to be satisfying. It needed an epilogue.

Zane Grey does not disappoint. He has clearly taken on the mantle of one who believes in the essentials of nature, the biologically intertwined lives of men and women, and the injustices wrought against WWI veterans. However, he is not reluctant to incorporate modern means and methods such as the motorcar and hot and cold water indoors. His only failure, in my view, is the contradiction between his two conflicting views of women. On the one hand he gives generous credit to western women, allowing that their lot may be the rougher because of their dual duties of partner and child bearer. On the other hand, every woman who comes from the "wicked East" is cast as jaded, selfish and senseless. I wonder what he would have thought of Florence Nightingale and her nurses serving on the front lines of that terrible war and springing from eastern cities to serve their brothers.

Great book! Totally unexpected. Definitely of another era. The words used would not be acceptable in this century were they written today... But a true love story and appreciation for the area of the southwest in its rugged glory. Thanks for making it free.
