Great read, especially when you have just moved to Arizona. And being originally from Utah, it gives you a more interesting story. Grey is definitely a great story teller. This one irritated the Mormons, but a good story needs a bad guy!!! I’m exploring the northern Arizona and Southern Utah region in my retired years. This story helped make my visits to towns in the region more fun. Frontier men and women were surely tough and lived by a different code than we do today. We should keep more of their ways!

A good read. Plenty of surprises towards the end. Pay attention to what you read. It might mean something later on.
  • Good ole book.

I am a retired teacher of both English and History. This book makes me wonder how he ever sold anything he wrote. His attention to detail is miserable as noticed when one burro was taken from the ranch and then suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, having two. His description of the sunrise bathing the face of the eastern cliffs shows his lack of knowledge of things solar. His knowledge of Utah geography is minimal at best. In today’s climate of inclusion and diversity his irrational and misplaced hatred toward “Mormons” is very objectionable. I would not recommend this book to anyone. Lynn Kenley

I read this book as a teenager. It was one of my favorites. 30 years later to read it again. I remembered everything. Almost every detail. I feel the same thrill when Jane says"roll the stone". Zane Grey loves words. But even though nobody talks like this now and probably never did. It is beautiful to read.
  • A seminal work.

This is a work that educates us to the level of literacy of the common man of 100 years ago. Writing with abandon and no apology Zane Grey proceeds to tell a story, like the great symphonies of the nineteenth century (of which he was). He coaxes you in and along, and through poetic scenes of pastoral tranquility, the magnificent Utah landscape, and the hard edged violent nature of those who saw it from the back of a great mount. A great romantic adventure. The true beginning of a wonderful genre.
